We're Brian and Jana Nail, and yes, the last name is real. BarkinNails is our family shop, our creative outlet, and the business we built from a high school shop class dream and a schnauzer named Jasper.
"Every piece starts with raw wood and ends as something someone will keep forever."
Brian Nail, OwnerWhen your last name is Nail and your schnauzer is your best shop companion, some business names just name themselves.
Brian first fell in love with woodworking in a high school shop class, but life had other plans for a while. After four years serving as a diesel mechanic in the United States Marine Corps, he came home with the discipline to build things right and the patience to build them well. But a dedicated woodshop stayed on the wish list for years.
BarkinNails started as a way to finally put that passion to work, earn some extra income, and build something that was theirs. What began as a hobby became a real business, one handcrafted piece at a time. Then came the laser engraver, a natural fit for someone who has always been drawn as much to technology as to hand tools. The combination turned out to be exactly the right one.
Three years in, BarkinNails ships handcrafted wood gifts, signs, custom furniture, and laser-engraved pieces to all 50 states. Every single order still gets the same care as the first one.
See Our WorkBarkinNails is a family operation. Three members, one shop, zero corners cut.
Brian designs and builds every piece, runs the laser, handles the woodwork from raw lumber to finished product, and manages the business end. His background as a Marine mechanic taught him that precision isn't optional, and that shows in every joint, cut, and finish.
USMC VeteranJana is the color and charm behind BarkinNails. She hand-paints the details that make every porch sign, seasonal piece, and gnome leaner come to life. If a piece has personality, Jana put it there. Her artistic eye is half of what makes a BarkinNails product instantly recognizable.
Hand-Paints Every DetailJasper is the schnauzer behind the logo, the inspiration for the name, and the unofficial shop supervisor. He doesn't sand, paint, or engrave anything, but his face is on every product we ship. We think that counts.
The Original BarkinNailThree principles go into every piece that ships from our shop.
Every joint is cut clean, every edge is sanded smooth, and every coat of finish is applied with care. The Marine Corps taught Brian that discipline in the details is what separates work you're proud of from work that just gets done.
Jana's hand-painted details aren't decoration. They're what turns a stained board into a story. Every color choice, every brushstroke, is done with the person receiving the piece in mind.
The laser engraver isn't a shortcut, it's a tool for precision that no hand tool can match at scale. Combining traditional woodworking with modern laser work is what makes BarkinNails pieces one of a kind.
Brian served four years in the United States Marine Corps as a diesel mechanic, where he learned that anything worth doing is worth doing right the first time. That mindset didn't stay at the base. It came home, walked into the shop, and shows up in every piece BarkinNails makes. We're proud to be a veteran-owned small business serving customers across all 50 states.
